In this passage, Jesus identifies himself as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. In the verses preceding our text, Jesus announces his imminent departure. Peter inquires and professes his undying loyalty. Jesus then predicts Peter’s denials. Then, Jesus speaks comfort to his followers, telling them that he is going to prepare a place for them in heaven. He promises that he will return and take them home to be with him. Not understanding, Thomas asks what Jesus means. This prompts Jesus to identify himself as the way to the Father. Jesus tells them, not that he is one way to the Father, but that he is the ONLY way to the Father. Salvation is available through Jesus Christ, and it is only available through him!
