In this passage, Jesus speaks about his own identity as God – the Giver of Life. Jesus responds to the Jewish leaders who wanted to kill him for blasphemy (claiming to be God – see verse 18). He answers the question, “Who is Jesus?” by telling them that he is equal to the Father. To make this point, Jesus tells his hearers that he is equal to the Father in works, in power, in judgment, and in honor.
After making his identity clear, Jesus describes himself as the giver of life. He is the One who gives eternal life, or spiritual life. Today, all those who will listen to Jesus and believe in the One who sent Jesus, will have eternal life (5:24). Jesus is also the giver of physical or resurrection life. One day, all the dead of all time will hear Jesus’ voice and come back to life. Some will rise to live and some to be condemned.
