Who is Jesus? He is God – the master over natural law. After Jesus fed over 5,000 people from a little boy’s lunch, he went up onto a mountain by himself to pray. He had sent his disciples ahead of him across the Sea of Galilee toward Capernaum. As they traveled across the lake, a huge storm arose. Even though some of the disciples knew the sea (being experienced fisherman), they were afraid. Then, they looked and saw someone walking on the water. This terrified them – they thought they saw a ghost. As it turns out, Jesus was walking on the water. He came into the boat and the storm stopped.
The miracle of walking on the water demonstrates that Jesus would be with his followers under all circumstances. It also demonstrates that Jesus, as God, is master over natural law. He is sovereign and can even suspend natural law at will. In his account, Matthew tells us that when Jesus came into the boat the disciples worshiped him and confessed that he was the Son of God.
