Jesus is the God who serves. As John writes his gospel, he told us from the beginning who Jesus is. He is God, the creator, God’s one and only Son, and the Savior of the world. On and on, John goes from chapter to chapter, from miracle to miracle and from conversation to conversation, proving his point – Jesus is God. Then, surprisingly, in chapter 13, John recounts the story of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet.
This act demonstrates the love that Jesus has toward his own. More than that, it shows that since Jesus (who is Lord and teacher) serves others, we ought to do the same. John’s account is clear, Judas was present and, no doubt, had his feet washed as well. Even though Jesus knew (as John points out) what Judas was about to do, he still served him. If only we would be willing to humble ourselves and serve others as Jesus did.
