False teachers tried to get the Galatians to add human effort (following the Old Testament Law) to God’s requirements for salvation. Paul vehemently opposed any change to the gospel. Christ is all you need for salvation. In this passage he deals with the rite of circumcision. (In Paul’s day, this signified submission to the Law in order to become right with God). He tells the Galatians that those who want to be made right before God by being circumcised have removed themselves from the realm of grace. They have moved back under the Law. Rather than this resulting in God’s blessing, they find themselves under God’s curse. Any addition to the gospel, doesn’t add to it, rather it takes away from it. Either Christ’s death is enough to pay for our salvation, or it is not. The true gospel message is simple – Christ plus nothing equals everything.
